Steve Stoler shares insights from his tenure as he prepares for retirement |
During a recent city council meeting, Steve Stoler, Plano’s inaugural Director of Media Relations, shared reflections on his 11-year tenure as he approaches retirement.
Drawing from his extensive background as a television reporter, Stoler emphasized his role as the essential link between city officials and local media outlets.
He recounted managing daily press inquiries, crafting timely statements on topics ranging from budget announcements to severe weather alerts, and steering the city through high-pressure crisis communications.
Among his notable achievements is the “Stoler on the Street” video series, which produced over 200 episodes highlighting community programs, hidden neighborhood gems, and explanations of municipal services.
He also played a pivotal role in launching the weekly “Plano City News” broadcast, collaborating with city officials to demystify policies and keep residents informed.
Stoler underscored the importance of building relationships—understanding reporters’ deadlines, anticipating questions, and working closely with the mayor’s office to ensure accurate, transparent messaging.
He credited his Communications and Media Relations teams for their collaborative spirit and for developing proactive plans for emergencies, from flash floods to public health updates.
As colleagues praised his calm demeanor and clear messaging style, Stoler reflected on the “dream job” he found in public service.
While he looks forward to retirement, he expressed confidence that his successor will continue the legacy of open, responsive communication that he helped establish in Plano. |
